...on the Road with Every Mother Counts - San Francisco to Salt Lake City
We stayed on in San Francisco for an additional day and even though the rain seemed to stay with us, our spirits were anything BUT dampened.
We started out Friday morning driving out to Antioch, CA to meet up with some friends at Containers to Clinics (C2C) and their partners atAllied Container Systems. Their collaboration is all about innovation and it was exciting to see the containers in person after learning about C2C’s founder Elizabeth Sheehan’s mission. The whole idea behind C2C is to utilize shipping containers not just as a vessel to send life-saving medical equipment and supplies overseas, but to make the shipping container itself a fully functional clinic. These two organizations are already partnering to send container clinics to Haiti, where C2C is already providing medical care on the grounds of what used to be a Children's hospital in Port au Prince. Now they're working on improving the prototype and taking the project to scale. This is a unique model and one that can revolutionize access and treatment for families especially those who are far from a facility.

Allied Container Systems, Inc., Completes Largest Urban Training Facility
PLEASANT HILL, CA - Allied Container Systems, Inc (ACS) a Center of Excellence for Urban Operations Training and one of the largest providers of containerized structures to the United States Government, is proud to announce the completion of the largest Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) training facility in the United States located at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC), Twenty-nine Palms, California.
“Container-based construction saves taxpayers millions of dollars while delivering highly realistic and necessary training to our Marines and Soldiers,” explains Roger Jacobs, President of Allied Container Systems.
Using standard ISO containers as building blocks, ACS delivered sustainable, value-based, realistic training “villages” with a corrugated exterior which is faced with faux concrete to better reflect the area of operation. These realistic and comprehensive structures require the warfighter to respond to the new and varied challenges while improving their techniques and procedures before deployment.
“The MCAGCC at Twenty-nine Palms, California pioneered the combined use of concrete building construction and container-based construction to design and install the largest, sustainable and most realistic Urban Operations training site in the world- faster and more affordable than ever before. This site will be a national training asset for decades to come” said Jacobs.
“Combined Arms MOUT” (CAMOUT) enables training in a live and non-live fire environment resembling the theatre of operations. This provides a challenging and complex urban training environment that replicates the difficulties units will face as they communicate, coordinate, navigate, maintain situational awareness, and track urban operations. A mixture of over 1500 training facility buildings, CAMOUT supports large scale exercises. Equipped with streets, courtyard walls, religious structures, and village shanties, the MOUT environment provides a realistic depiction of the urban combat zone, setting the stage for vital and realistic mission rehearsals.
“Being deployed twice, I wish we would have had training like this. Maybe more of the guys would have come back alive...” said Matt Brooks, a two tour veteran of combat in Iraq and a Project Manager with ACS.
By the numbers:
· $170 million cost
· 1,560 structures used in the training
· 274 acres of city-based training space
· 15,000 Marines, soldiers and sailors who can train at one time
· 1,866 feet of tunnels
· 38 basement hideouts
· 81 spider holes concealed throughout the complex
· 9,150 feet of courtyard walls
· 5,325 feet of chain-link fence
· 10,705 feet of simulated power lines
· 7 districts or neighborhoods throughout the city

Troops get urban combat training in massive mock city
PLEASANT HILL, CA
Via MyDesert.com
Jan. 25, 2011
The convoy of amphibious assault vehicles and tanks grinds to a halt in a neighborhood that needed to be secured.
The 1st Battalion, 5th Marines have barely jumped onto the sand when the sounds of machine gun fire fill the air and simulated devices start exploding.
“Incoming!” someone yells out as fellow Marines duck along a sand dune.
The scene played out Tuesday as part of an extensive urban terrain training program at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.
The $170 million program, unveiled Tuesday, is conducted in a mock city made from shipping containers and other material. It spans 274 acres and includes 1,560 buildings — making it roughly the size of downtown San Diego.
The training is an extension of Mojave Viper, a smaller but similar training that's been at the Twentynine Palms base since 2005.
Its sheer size allows as many as 15,000 Marines and sailors to simultaneously engage in combat and humanitarian training efforts.
“Everything you see out here is absolutely deliberate,” said Brig. Gen. H. Stacy Clardy III, the base's commanding general.
“It's to provide for the most flexible and realistic training we can provide to our Marines, to help us accomplish our mission wherever we go and certainly to protect the lives of those Marines.”
Officials say the program, formally called Combined Arms Military Operations in Urban Terrain, provides troops with the most true-to-life training possible.
The city's layout is modeled after typical communities in Afghanistan and Iraq.
That includes a circular town center, a hospital district and a full-scale soccer stadium where troops can land helicopters. Base officials have also applied what they call an immersive training technique to bring the city to life:
About 1,000 role players interact with training Marines, even shifting allegiances or their level of support for the U.S. to reflect possible real-world scenarios.
Many buildings are furnished. One block of hotels had curtains in the windows, signs, and vintage computers on the desks.

MCAGCC's new $170 million urban warfare training facility nearly complete
By Kelly O'Sullivan
The Desert Trail (click here for original article)
MCAGCC — Forgive Bryan Robertson if he sounds a little like a proud father when he talks about the sprawling city rising from the desert floor at the foot of Mount Hidalgo aboard the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.
“At first there were people saying, ‘you’ll never be able to do this,’” Robertson said during a tour of the site in October, shortly before leaving his post at the end of a five-year contract.
“I’m happy with what we accomplished ... the big thing about training is you have to define the training objective. We’ve really done it and done it well.”
For nearly four years, the project development officer spent five days a week at CAMOUT, a $170 million, 280-acre urban warfare facility 30 minutes from MCAGCC’s Mainside area, growing the city literally from the ground up.

Allied Container Systems Builds Entire Cities From Shipping Containers
Via Treehugger.com

TreeHugger has shown quite a few shipping container houses and even a few shipping container buildings, but never anything on the scale of the work of Allied Container Systems; they buildentire cities out of shipping containers. But they are not inhabited; they are giant sets, training facilities for Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) There are lots of them all over the world, and they are spectacular.

The company does also manufacture habitable structures, but their main gig is training facilities for the US Marine Corps.

They can simulate almost anything that the Marines might face in the course of their work.

ACS is a member of USGBC and is presenting at Greenbuild, but how is this green? Certainly by using shipping containers as building blocks, they are creating a training environment out of a surplus resource, one that can be used and reused and reassembled to simulate whatever urban terrain is needed. More at Allied Container Systems.

The Gentlemen of ACS at Greenbuild.

ACS, Inc., Completes 35 Urban Operations Sites in Less than a Year
PLEASANT HILL, CA - Allied Container Systems, Inc (ACS) a Center of Excellence for Urban Operations Training has announced the successful completion of 35 Urban Operation Sites in less than one year.Armed with the largest MOUT (Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain) Design Library in the industry, as well as the most experienced MOUT site installation team, ACS, using standard ISO containers as building blocks, delivers sustainable, value-based and realistic training complexes to the US Army. ACS is now able to transform the corrugated exterior to better reflect the area of operation by adding “In Theater Facades: Architectural Stone Finish”. These realistic and comprehensive structures require the warfighter to respond to the new and varied challenges while improving their techniques and procedures before deployment.
In 2008, ACS was awarded the Urban Operation Site (UOS) contract with TACOM. As of August 2009, ACS has delivered over 570 structures consisting of approximately 1,000 containers. Each of the 35 sites populated with ACS Urban Operation Structures were completed and ready for the training audience in less than ninety days. All UOS structures are designed to support Non-Live-Fire (NLF), SESAMS, UTM and other training munitions and include standard features that minimize maintenance while maximizing sustainability and safety. UOS installations have performed in a variety of weather conditions at locations all across the continental United States (CONUS), Hawaii, and in Germany. A key performance factor in the success of the UOS program has been ACS’ ability to run multiple installations in parallel with fast response to inevitable rescheduling requests by the government.
“Home station training better prepares soldiers for the culminating training at the National Training Centers at Ft. Irwin and Ft. Polk.,” said Jennifer Lamar, Senior Vice President at Allied Container System, Inc. “Live training has been found to not only improve mission success but also reduce casualties.”
In addition to the design, fabrication and installation of the UOS “villages” contracted through the TACOM contract; ACS offers Live Immersive Training (LIT) through GSA and other contract vehicles. LIT provides culturally accurate role players, set dressing and battle effects to realistically portray the environment that will be found in the area of operation. This realism reflects accurate conditions found in high interest environments world-wide. In ACS’s continued dedication to doing its part to help improve mission success, scenario based live training has been found to save lives of US troops as well as the lives of innocent civilians, who live in the area of operation.

Allied Container Systems Launches New Engineering Internship Program
(Pleasant Hill, CA) – Allied Container Systems (ACS) is planning to launch a new engineering internship program in February 2008. Phase I of the program will focus on civil/structural and mechanical engineering specialties and Phase II on electrical and software development engineering.
Since 1992, ACS has developed expertise in the design, fabrication, modification, and installation of container-based turnkey solutions. This turnkey approach to mobile container/shelter design has resulted in a rapidly growing customer base to meet the needs of the Department of Homeland Security, the US Army/Navy/Marine Corps, Canadian Army, as well as numerous law enforcement and fire departments throughout the country. Over the last few years, the company has been awarded major new contracts in support of US Marine Corps requirements. One such requirement was the construction of a container-based Iraqi village at Marine Corps Base, 29 Palms, CA. This contract called for the installation of a 26-square-block city, built from 900 containers (326 buildings), replicating with impressive realism the urban environments encountered by our deployed troops. Significant numbers of Marines deployed to Iraq are now sent to 29 Palms for urban warfare training in this realistic training environment. Similar urban training facilities are under construction at Marine Corps Bases at Camp Pendleton, CA and Camp Lejeune, NC.
The company is competing for many new contracts similar to the US Marine Corps requirement. As a result, ACS anticipates considerable growth over the next few years. An infusion of new engineers, representing a variety of engineering disciplines, will be essential to meet company goals. The company believes that collaborating with engineering schools, through the implementation of engineering internship programs, is a win-win opportunity for new engineers, engineering schools, and ACS.
Interns will work directly with ACS engineers as members of the engineering team responsible for the design, fabrication, installation, and field testing of the company’s modular, mobile facilities. Qualified internship candidates will be hired as engineering interns (full-time paid position) with the opportunity to compete for permanent staff engineering positions following the successful completion of the three-month internship. ACS believes in establishing a close mentor-protégé relationship between staff engineers and interns. Internship positions will be available at any time of the calendar year based on student schedules and the company’s needs.
Internship participants will have a first-hand opportunity to contribute to the mission of a growing company directly supporting the security and national defense of the United States. Interns will also have hiring preferences for full-time permanent engineering positions with a company that envisions significant growth and ever-increasing success. Such an environment offers new engineers the satisfaction of experiencing significant professional challenges and promotion opportunities, a very competitive compensation and bonus plan, and an opportunity to truly make a difference in the performance of engineering tasks closely linked to homeland security, public safety, and national defense objectives.
